The contract is worth in excess of €1.2 billion and includes the provision of services on 206 routes nationwide.

At the signing of the contract on 29 November 2024, Bus Éireann Chairperson Miriam Hughes, said: “Bus Éireann is very pleased to be awarded this Direct Award contract by the National Transport Authority. We look forward to continuing to build on the momentum of sustainable journey growth which is now evident for public transport and developing continued service improvements with the NTA, over the next five years. This includes our electrification and decarbonisation programme for our new fleet of public buses that serve our regional city and town networks and continuing to enhance service reliability for all our customers across Ireland.

With the support of our dedicated staff, we continuously strive to deliver even higher standards of service every day for all our customers and the awarding of this Direct Award Contract is very welcome recognition of the high standards of public transport provision and value for money we provide for the communities we are proud to serve”

Stephen Kent, Bus Éireann CEO, said; “We are proud to be awarded this contract by the NTA, to continue to provide essential public transport services and connectivity to communities all over the country.  It is a true testament to all of our people, who work so hard to provide a quality service to our customers nationwide.

2024 was a milestone year for Bus Éireann which included the commencement of the transition of the first regional city service to zero emission fleet in Limerick. We are delighted to play our part in significantly growing public transport usage throughout Ireland which helps to foster local economic growth, enhanced social mobility and a greener, cleaner environment for future generations to come.

We look forward to a very positive collaboration with the NTA and delivering on our obligations through the Direct Award contract to continue growing sustainable passenger journeys, helping to make life better’.

NTA Chief Executive, Anne Graham added; “We are delighted to award Bus Éireann a new five-year direct award contract, reaffirming our commitment to reliable, sustainable, and customer-focused public transport particularly as passenger numbers on PSO services nationwide continue to grow. We look forward to working together to enhance services for the public and support a more connected, greener Ireland.”
